Str8tlkThe latest mobiles are more like personalised mini-computers than phones. As well as voice calls and SMS, you can
- take pictures
- send MMS
- find out the latest sports scores, HSC results, etc.
You can even listen to the radio or watch TV.
These new features are useful and fun, but it can be a challenge at times to understand what's what!
And there are some potential downsides, eg.
- People using mobiles to send threatening SMS or to spread nasty rumours.
- SMS can sometimes be misinterpreted.
- You have to work out what you can afford!

 Instant Messaging A OK
Despite claims to the contrary, instant messaging (IM) through services like MSN and Yahoo! does not harm literacy levels.
A University of Toronto study has found participants aged 15 to 20 who use instant messaging were actually using a “fusion of different levels of diction”.
